Leptospirosis

Leptospira interrogansLeptospira interrogans is a bacteria that is able to cause serious illness in many different types of animals. In humans, Leptospira interrogans causes leptospirosis, a disease that can cause multiple body organ damage.  It is often difficult to diagnose because it is not commonly seen in humans.

 

 

 

Diseases

  • Leptospirosis (a fever-causing illness that can damage organs such as kidneys, lungs, liver, and eyes)


Habitat & Transmision

  • Found in the urine of animals such as dogs, rats, and farm animals. 
  • Also found in urine-contaminated water and soil


Weapons/Defenses

  • Creates poisons capable of breaking down cell walls. 
  • With flagella, able to spin like a corkscrew and burrow through the body's tissues and organs.


Weaknesses 

  • Vaccination of dogs and farm animals can reduce the risk of transmission.
